Diving in Nusa Penida

Why Nusa Penida is one of the best dives on the planet

Nusa Penida sits on the Lombok Strait, where the Indonesian Throughflow funnels nutrient-rich water through one of the strongest currents in the ocean. The result: year-round manta rays, seasonal mola mola, pristine coral gardens and drift dives that rank among the world's best — all inside a Marine Protected Area declared in 2010 and expanded in 2019.

Top dive sites in Nusa Penida

Eight world-class sites within a 30-minute boat ride from our centre in Toyapakeh.

Year-round mantas, 3 cleaning stations Year-round mantas, 3 cleaning stations

Manta Point

South coast

The most reliable manta encounter in Bali. Three established cleaning stations between 5 and 20 m attract reef mantas with wingspans up to 5 m, often in groups on calm mornings. Conditions can shift quickly due to the southern swell — we run this site early when the sea is flat.

OPEN WATER+ 5–20 m
Mola mola Jul–Oct Mola mola Jul–Oct

Crystal Bay

West coast

The legendary mola mola site. From July to October cold upwellings (16–22 °C below the thermocline) bring oceanic sunfish up to 25–30 m, where divers meet them at the cleaning stations. Inside the bay it's a gentle slope suitable for fun dives; the outer reef and channel are advanced terrain — Crystal is famous for its strong down-currents and demands a proper briefing.

ADVANCED (DEEP/DOWN-CURRENT ZONE) 5–30 m
Crystal-clear water, dense coral, schooling fish Crystal-clear water, dense coral, schooling fish

Toyapakeh

Penida–Ceningan channel

Our local site, right in front of the centre. A shallow coral plateau at 6–15 m and a wall dropping to 30 m, with some of the strongest currents in Indonesia when the tides peak. When conditions allow, it's a textbook drift through one of the healthiest reefs in the Nusa Islands.

ADVANCED (CURRENTS) 6–30 m
Healthy reef, turtles, occasional mola/manta Healthy reef, turtles, occasional mola/manta

SD Point

North coast

Named after the school on the shore (Sekolah Dasar in Bahasa Indonesia). The classic Penida drift dive over a long sloping reef — pristine corals, schooling reef fish, and pelagic encounters when the current's right. One of the best sites in Indonesia for confident Open Water divers.

OPEN WATER+ 5–30 m

Blue Corner

Northwest (Lembongan side)

Penida's most demanding site. Erratic currents, mola mola at 30–40 m during the cold season, and reef sharks cruising the drop-off. Strict experience requirement: confident drift diving, 30+ logged dives, and a controlled briefing — we will not dive here outside the right window.

ADVANCED ONLY 18–40 m
Turtles, coral gardens, pelagics in the blue Turtles, coral gardens, pelagics in the blue

Pura ped

North coast (between SD Point & Sental)

Named after the village and temple ("pura") it sits opposite, Ped is a classic north-coast drift over a long sloping reef. On a high tide it's a gentle drift that suits newer divers; on a low tide the current picks up and the dive turns sportier. Healthy hard coral and bommies, turtles on almost every dive, and white-tip reef sharks, eagle rays and seasonal mola mola cruising the blue. The reef keeps dropping well past recreational limits, so we manage depth carefully on the slope.

OPEN WATER+ 5–30 m
Pelagics in the blue, macro on the plateau Pelagics in the blue, macro on the plateau

Sental

North coast (east of Ped, toward Tugu)

The next site east of Ped, with a slightly steeper slope and a richer plateau. The well-preserved 7–18 m zone is great for newer divers and training, while the drift can turn sportier depending on the current - we stay close together here, since shifting currents and down-currents need an experienced guide. Sental is one of the north coast's best for pelagics: mola mola, tuna, barracuda, thresher sharks and eagle rays all show up in season. We finish shallow over the plateau for macro - octopus, frogfish, mantis shrimp, nudibranchs and turtles.

"My husband and I did a nitrox certification course with DPM Diving. Enzo was a great course instructor and perfectly explained all the theory and then guided us on 2 wonderful dives at Manta Point and Crystal Bay. He went out of his way to accommodate our needs and made us feel super comfortable. Would highly recommend diving here - Enzo, other instructors/ dive masters, the dive crew and the owner were all amazing and we had the best time. We will be back soon!"

Chat on WhatsApp
Is Nusa Penida good for diving?
Yes — it's widely considered the best diving destination in Bali. The island sits on the Lombok Strait, where the Indonesian Throughflow Current fuels a vast Marine Protected Area with year-round manta rays, seasonal mola mola, healthy coral gardens and some of the most exciting drift diving in Southeast Asia.
Can beginners dive in Nusa Penida?
Yes, but not at every site. Calmer sites like SD Point, Gamat Bay and the inner bay at Crystal Bay are suitable for Open Water divers. More exposed sites like Blue Corner and the outer reef of Toyapakeh demand advanced experience because of strong currents. We match every diver to a site profile after the briefing.
When can I see manta rays in Nusa Penida?
All year round. Manta Point on the south coast has three active cleaning stations between 5 and 20 m where reef mantas with wingspans up to 5 m gather to be cleaned. Calm mornings give the best conditions. We can't guarantee sightings — they're wild animals — but the year-round success rate is around 70%.
When is the best time to dive with mola mola?
July to October. Cold upwellings push oceanic sunfish from the depths to recreational diving range (around 25–30 m) at Crystal Bay and Blue Corner. The water gets cold during this window — 18–22 °C below the thermocline, sometimes lower — so a 5 mm wetsuit is recommended.
What's the water temperature in Nusa Penida?
Surface temperature ranges from 26–29 °C during the warm season (November–June) to 20–26 °C in the cold season (July–October). Below the thermocline during mola season the water can drop to 16–22 °C, which is why we use 5 mm wetsuits during those months.
How's the visibility?
Typically 15–30 m. Visibility peaks at 25–30 m in June and July. It can drop to 10–15 m on the south coast (Manta Point) when there's a swell, and during the rainy peak (January–February) near coastal river outflows.
How much does diving in Nusa Penida cost?
Fun dives start at IDR 1.750.000 and courses range from IDR 2.400.000 for a Try Scuba day up to IDR 21.000.000 for the full Divemaster programme. See the courses section above for the full price list.
Do you offer adaptive diving in Nusa Penida?
Yes. Our instructor Aida is trained in adaptive diving and runs sessions for divers with reduced mobility, sensory impairments and other adaptive needs. Message us in advance so we can plan the equipment, pace and dive site around you.
